Vibha's project selection philosophy is based on the fundamental principle of maximizing the impact of every contribution. Every project funded by Vibha needs to fit in with the mission and vision of Vibha. The project should not discriminate based on gender, caste, race, religion or language and should be a non-political, not-for profit organization. Apart from the above mandatory qualities expected out of every project, the project selection team has a set of qualitative criteria which will ensure the effectiveness of the project in accomplishing its goals. Vibha makes a concerted effort to select small to medium-sized projects.
Vibha believes that ultimately the community should become a part of the solution and therefore looks for projects which reflect that approach. Our monitors, who are stationed in India conduct in-depth research and analysis on each proposed project along with our volunteers before making a final recommendation for funding. Every project goes through several iterations of questions and answers between the selection team and the project manager. The competence of the organization requesting funding is established through annual audited reports, reference checks, pre-funding evaluations performed during volunteer visits, in addition to the critical appraisal of their detailed project proposal.
Currently Vibha uses two means to monitor projects: 1) project visits done by our full time employees in India, 2) volunteer visits and extensive communication with the projects. Our full time monitoring staff in India make regular project visits and document every visit in a detailed project visit report. In addition, volunteers visit the projects for an in person review during their visits to India. These efforts combine to ensure the quality of the project.
Since our inception in 1991, Vibha has raised $13 million and supported more than 250 projects in India and 10 projects in the US. As a result, Vibha has been able to reach out to and provide opportunities for over 300,000 underprivileged children. Currently, Vibha supports 30 projects in India and 7 projects in the US.
Please Note: The number of currently funded projects changes frequently based on the project selection activity. The number provided here reflects the statistic at a particular point in time.
Different projects have different goals and are probably in different stages of their development. Based on the goals, the stage of development as well as macro conditions such as local population, local support, social environment, etc. costs of the projects could vary significantly.
